Project Backpack Receives $1100 for Local Students

elementary_clipart The Chester Lions Club supports efforts to further education in a number of ways.  The Club provides numerous scholarships for High School Seniors and is supportive of “The Nurses Fund” which aids local students in many ways.

An initiative presented at a recent meeting intrigued the Board of Directors enough to provide $1100.00 to “Project Backpack”.  Started 10 years ago by Christina Stellingwerf of Chester, the initiative provides Back Packs filled with school supplies to disadvantaged children in grades K thru 8.
In the last 9 years 240 students have received Back Packs giving them confidence as they interact with their peers.
Chester school principals enthusiastically back the idea and have been providing “The Project” with the number of students who would benefit from the largess.  The number of students in need over the last three years have ranged from 50 to 56 students.
